Who Is The Armed Forces Para-Snowsport Team?
We are an all-volunteer charitable organisation led by a board of trustees. Our aim – to give back to those who have given so much.
Our Success
Our success is built on three core elements that make up our snow family:
- Our incredible Athlete Beneficiaries, who seize every opportunity to grow, challenge themselves, and support one another on and off the snow. Their determination, camaraderie, and resilience are the heartbeat of everything we do.
- A cohort of brilliant volunteers, many of whom are former beneficiaries themselves, who give their time, energy, and lived experience to guide, coach, and care for others on their recovery journey.
- Our partnerships and collaborations allow us to deliver exceptional experiences, access world-class facilities, and continuously evolve our program through shared expertise and mutual commitment.
“Together, the snow family creates a powerful, life-changing environment where recovery is real, purpose is rediscovered, and lives are transformed in the mountains and beyond.”
Measuring Success
We will be judged not only by medals won but by lives changed across four measures:
- Recovery: Supporting physical and mental recovery of our beneficiaries forging stronger bodies and healthier minds.
- Purpose: Reigniting drive, discipline, resilience and life goals through snowsport.
- Community and Belonging: Through the snow family create a lifelong family that strengthens identity and recovery.
- Partnerships for Greater Impact: By forging purposeful partnerships, we unlock collective resources and expertise to ensure that every beneficiary with the potential to thrive in adaptive snowsport, has the opportunity to do so.
Who are we?
We are an independent charity that uses the restorative and transforming power of para-snowsport to accelerate and support the recovery and welfare of our wounded, injured and sick serving military personnel and veterans.
What do we do?
The Armed Forces Para Snowsport Team (AFPST) provides life-changing opportunities through adaptive snowboarding, alpine, and nordic skiing. The programme fosters personal growth, resilience, and teamwork in a supportive mountain environment and is designed to serve personnel and veterans with physical or psychological conditions. Our beneficiaries gain a renewed sense of purpose and independence as they work towards individual and shared goals. The powerful combination of competition, camaraderie, and the natural therapeutic effect of the mountains delivers transformational change, offering hope, confidence, and the motivation to rebuild their lives.
How do we do it?
We deliver a world-class, multi-tiered Para-Snowsport Programme that supports every stage of our Athlete Beneficiaries’ journey, from first-time skiers to elite athletes. Designed with flexibility at its core, the programme prioritises personal progress and wellbeing while also providing a pathway to international competition for those with the talent, drive and ability to go further. Along the way, we build a strong, supportive community, what we proudly call our “snow family”, where shared experiences foster lasting bonds and genuine transformation.
Outcomes of AFPST
Through our unique, world-class para-snowsport programme, AFPST delivers life-changing outcomes for our beneficiaries; wounded, injured, and sick service personnel and veterans who turn to us at a time when direction, identity, and hope may feel out of reach.
“This is transformation in motion. It’s not just about helping people recover it is about empowering them to thrive, lead, and redefine what’s possible”
We Deliver Outcomes That Endure Far Beyond The Mountains
Rebuild confidence and enhance lifelong wellbeing: Our beneficiaries regain belief in their physical capabilities and mental strength. Whether it’s their first time back on skis or standing on a podium, we equip them with tools for long-term physical health, emotional resilience, and psychological recovery.
Foster renewed purpose and a rediscovered competitive spirit: Through structured training and competition, we reignite drive, discipline, and ambition. For many, this is the first experience of being part of a focused, high-performance team since their service, restoring pride and a deep sense of identity.
Support successful transition into civilian life: We provide the bridge from military life to civilian reintegration. Our programme builds routine, camaraderie, and accountability. These are key components of successful transition and empowers beneficiaries to explore employment, education, and broader life goals.
Strengthen connections with family, friends, and the wider community: Recovery is not a solo journey. We help rebuild and strengthen relationships by improving personal wellbeing and including families and carers into the AFPST community – creating shared moments of joy, connection, and pride.
Build a lifelong community of belonging: AFPST becomes more than a programme, it becomes a home. The friendships, support networks, and shared experiences formed on snow last long after the kit is packed away. This sense of belonging is a vital part of lasting recovery.
At AFPST, our immersive, high-impact model offers more than sport; it creates a space for growth, healing, and renewed ambition. Together with our beneficiaries, we break barriers, forge powerful bonds, and accelerate recovery.
Our Athletes
Here’s what our athletes have to say about their experience and outcomes from joining the Armed Forces Para-Snowsport Team Programme.
Steve Arnold | Para Nordic
When former Staff Sergeant Steve Arnold joined the Royal Engineers, he was carrying on a family tradition. His Grandad, Dad and Brother had all served and Steve was passionate about fulfilling his boyhood dream.
Scott Meenagh | Para Nordic
Former Private Scott Meenagh achieved his boyhood dream of being one of the most elite professional soldiers in the world when he joined the Paratroopers.
Dan Sheen | Para Alpine
When Dan first joined the AFPST team, he hurtled down an Alpine Slalom run using a single sit ski. Since then, he has thrown himself into the Alpine Paralympic Programme with the highest of aspirations for the future.
Darren Swift | Snowboard
As an athlete and mentor, double, above knee amputee ‘Swifty’ has achieved enormous success on the snow. “The charity has enabled me to make new friends in a group of like-minded people – an opportunity which is just as important as any new-found skills on the slopes”.
Troy Connor | Nordic
I’ve proudly served in two Regiments during my time, starting off with my local Regiment the Duke of Wellingtons from 1996 until 2002. I missed the Military way of life and decided to rejoin in 2004. This time I wanted to really challenge myself so I went for the Elite Parachute Regiment. I was fortunate and switched on enough to be selected for 1Para SFSG.
Kevin Drake | Para Alpine
Royal Engineer veteran, Kevin Drake, left the army in 2008 having served twelve years. Nine months later, he re-joined, having missed the camaraderie and sense of purpose the Forces gave. Kevin was part way through his second tour of Afghanistan when he was caught up in an explosion.
